Backup Software

The backup software has a familiar interface which makes it easy to use for all skill levels. The backup software can run in a totally invisible mode of operation that silently backs up data at scheduled intervals without interrupting your daily work. The Event Manager will alert you in the event of a problem or missed backup.

Bandwidth Requirements

The initial backup of your data will take the longest and consume the most bandwidth. Even though the backup software uses compression and FastBit patching the full effect of these two processes will not be seen until the initial backup is done. The FastBit patching process is the core technology behind the speedy backup service. The patching process involves the comparison of two different versions of the same file and extracting the differences between the files. When the differences are extracted from the two files, they are saved into a new file and compressed into what is known as a Patch. The patch file is often 85% to 99.9% smaller than the file, which the patch was extracted from originally.

In order to perform a FastBit backup, the software has to backup the files3 times: the first backup is a full, the next backup will perform an incremental, and the third performs the FastBit backup.

The FastBIT patching process manipulates files at the binary level. This means it can process any file type without error. Different types of files will yield different FastBIT patch sizes based on the binary organization of the file. We provide some FastBIT patch statistics to illustrate this point further.

Determining Storage Needs

Note, CyberLynk's Offsite Backup Service provides multiple versioning of documents. As new versions of documents are stored for your retrieval, additional space is required. CyberLynk recommends selecting a Storage Quota which is a minimum of 50% greater then your current total file size and recommends a quota which is 2x the size of your current disk usage.

Multiple Versioning: Each time a document is edited it represents a new version. The CyberLynk data backup system scans the files that are scheduled for backup and looks for files which are new or have changed. If the file has changed it represents a new version. Multiple versions of designated files are stored for recovery. By default, older versions of documents are stored for 30 days.
